YESS students do their part at Sam’s Point

YESS (Youth Empowerment and Sustainability Skills) students from Pine Bush High School volunteered their time to help support New York State parks by visiting Sam’s Point at Minnewaska State Park.

Two young women wearing hardhats carry large logs. They've stopped and smiled.

The students were given three volunteer project options: build a bog bridge on the High Point Trail, pull invasive species around the Loop Trail, or work at the visitor’s center helping create pamphlets and planting native plant seeds in the butterfly garden.

The view is from above. High School students walk down between large rock walls. The space they are entering is very narrow.

From below, you see a few high school students walking out of an area that was very narrow, large rocks.

After several hours of volunteer work from the students, they gathered for lunch and a hike through the ice caves.

Four students, wearing long sleeve jackets, jeans, backpacks. Two have hardhats on. They are standing on a log, with greenery in the background.

“These are great students,” said Kara Sprague, their YESS instructor. “It was an amazing day. I am thankful for it all.”
