On cold Saturday morning in December, members of the Pine Bush High School Youth in Government attended and participated in a Wreaths Across America ceremony at the cemetery in Modena.
This is an annual event that happens across the country and other parts of the world on the second Saturday of December. This event allows us to remember all the servicemen and women that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. This is so they will never be forgotten. Those who participate in this event lay a fresh evergreen wreath on all veterans’ graves in cemeteries in the United States, those who died at sea, and cemeteries where servicemen and women have been laid to rest overseas.
“This is Youth in Government’s third year in a row where we have been asked to participate in this solemn but necessary event,” said Charlene Webster. “Participants lay the wreath and say the serviceman or woman’s name out loud to make sure they are never forgotten.”
Some information about this event
- Wreaths Across America is an American nonprofit organization established in 2007 by wreath producer Morrill Worcester, assisted by veterans and truckers. Its primary activity is distributing wreaths for placement on veterans’ graves in military cemeteries.
- People are allowed to sponsor a wreath or donate money to buy multiple wreaths.
- There are more than 2 million volunteers and supporters who gather to Remember, Honor, and Teach (their motto) at more than 4,600 participating locations in all 50 states, at sea, and abroad.
- Each year the organization picks a theme. This year’s theme was “Live With A Purpose.”
“This is one of my favorite things to do with the Youth in Government group” said Ms. Webster. “Even though it is about an hour and a half, the impact it makes on our members is strong. Thank you to the students who participated and their parents for also attending. I am so appreciative to this group of students this year. They are eager to get involved and be the leaders of our future.”
